What are Well Child Visits?
Well Child Visits are also known as Preventive Care Visits, or routine health care that is focused on preventing illnesses, disease and other health problems. These visits include:
- A review of your child’s general health and well-being
- Physical exam
- Sports physicals – need referral from Primary Care Provider
- Check-ups
- Screenings
- Immunizations
- Counseling and interventions
- Recommendations about general health like diet, exercise, disease screenings or well-being
The Importance of Well Child Visits
At these appointments, children receive important preventive care, such as immunizations, to keep them healthy.
Parents get the opportunity to discuss the growth and development of their children, different milestones, social behaviors and learning developments.
This is also a great time to talk with the child’s pediatrician about any concerns parents may have such as sleep, eating, development and behavior.
Ultimately, these appointments help strengthen the bond between the provider and child, along with creating a team approach to ensure the child is healthy and receiving all the care they need.
It is recommended that children have these visits once per year between the ages of 3 and 21 years old. If your child is under the age of 3, consult with their pediatrician for how often they should receive their well child visit.
Appointments fill up quickly, aim to schedule Well Child appointments three to six months before they are due.
